Rivers Casino Portsmouth Receives Approval from Virginia Lottery Board

Rush Street Gaming got a casino facility operator’s license from the Virginia Lottery Board for its Rivers Casino Portsmouth. The venue is still under construction, which began last December with a groundbreaking ceremony and is expected to be completed in early 2023.

The $300m project of Rush Street Gaming will feature, in particular, a BetRivers Sportsbook, with multiple high-definition screens airing multiple games, including baseball, tennis, hockey, basketball, soccer, and ping-pong. In the facility there will be self-service kiosks, live ticket windows, club chairs and banquettes for groups as well as various dining options, including Topgolf Swing Suite, Admiral’s Steak & Seafood, Crossings Café, Mian Slice Pizzeria and Starbucks.

Kelly T. Gee, Virginia Lottery executive director, noted that the lottery’s gaming compliance department and legal counsel assisted in today’s decision by conducting investigations and background checks on the applicants; the lottery worked with all casino applicants, their vendors and employees to make sure all aspects of the operation were in strict compliance with Virginia law.

Ferhan Hamid, Board chairman, noted that the gaming landscape in Virginia continued to evolve and the Lottery Board was committed to ensuring that casinos in the commonwealth were operated responsibly, fairly and with the utmost integrity. Hamid added that while not all Virginians would choose to visit those facilities, all of the citizens needed to be confident that they were regulated with the very highest standards.

It’s worth mentioning that during 2022, a number of jobs fairs were held by Rivers Casino Portsmouth to fill 1,300 permanent jobs.

Note that, besides BetRivers Sportsbook and a casino floor, the venue will feature an event center, a live entertainment lounge, and a hotel.

In other news, locals don’t want casino gaming to expand in New Jersey.
